OTHER WAYS TO GIVE

● Join ’50 For the Future’ and give monthly, sustainable donations that fit your budget. Consider giving in honor of a child, grandchild or someone who values the arts.

● If you are age 72 or older and required to take a minimum distribution from your retirement investments (RMD), check with your tax advisor on the advantages of diverting your RMD to a charitable organization, like the New JACC.

● You may also make a direct, one-time donation to the project.

Every donation, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated and helps bring us closer to breaking ground!

Do your holiday shopping locally at the Juneau Public Market. The event is in person this year at Centennial Hall.

Peter Metcalfe started organizing this market in 1983 and the popularity has  grown to expand beyond Centennial Hall to include the Juneau Arts and Culture Center and the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall. Over the years, the JACC has been happy to welcome the additional vendors and shoppers.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, this year’s market is only happening in Centennial Hall. Peter expects the JACC and the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall will be reopened for the market in 2022. Be sure to swing by the JACC to check out all of the wonderful, locally-made arts and gifts in the Lobby Shop.

Peter said he supports a new, larger arts and culture center that could serve as the hub for not only the Juneau Public Market but the Aak’w Village District as well.

“There’s no end to what we could do, given the space. I like the idea of a campus and I like the idea of getting people down to the center of Juneau for their holiday retail shopping. It does the whole community good.”

Out of the 125 vendors participating this year, 60 are from out of town. Dozens of small business owners from around Alaska and the Lower 48 will travel to Juneau for the event. That means a boost to our economy as they stay in hotels, eat at restaurants and shop at our stores.

A new facility that combined Centennial Hall with a new arts and culture facility means more possibilities to draw in vendors for future events.

See Color See Me

Stop by the JACC in November to see Crystal Worl’s new solo exhibit in the gallery.

See Color See Me is a collection of two years of work. Crystal was supposed to have a show in the summer of 2020 but it got delayed because of the pandemic. The extension gave her time to create art based on all of her experiences.

“The pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, the removal of colonial statues, the world going virtual. There’s a lot of things that happened, including a lot of feelings of stress, anxiety, loss and also gratitude, being closer to loved ones.”

Crystal said there were some challenges installing her show in the gallery because of different types of wall materials, especially the cement. She’d like to see a new gallery space like the one proposed in the new facility.

“The lighting is not the best. There could be more flattering carpets, there are heaters showing. It’s a great space but it has so much more potential to be an actually exhibition space and professional gallery that could really level-up our artists we represent here,” Crystal said.

Not only would a new venue create a more inviting environment for artists, it could also benefit the whole community.

“It would pull in more visitors to come and visit and help stimulate the economy for local artists and local creatives who sell at the JACC,” she said.

Crystal’s show will be up through the month of November. Stop by to check it out during business hours or swing by while you’re shopping at the Juneau Public Market.
